Research

Research is an essential component in understanding the rich history of the Lakeland Métis Nation. Through rigorous investigation, we uncover valuable insights that help shape our future. Research allows us to decipher historical complexities and assess current needs, enabling us to create tailored plans for our Nation. Our research extends beyond academia, driven by our passion and commitment to addressing contemporary issues. It bridges the past, present, and future, facilitating informed progress and unlocking the potential of our community based on knowledge and shared heritage.

Environmental Studies

The considerable industrial growth in northeastern Alberta has profoundly affected the Lakeland Métis Nation. Since 2012, the Nation has engaged in comprehensive Traditional Land Use studies to understand this impact, providing valuable insights into how traditional lands and resources have been affected. As the Lakeland Métis Nation grows, it is expanding research to include socioeconomic impacts, assessing the economic and social effects of industrial growth. These efforts demonstrate the Nation's commitment to understanding and addressing industrial growth's impacts, ensuring the long-term sustainability and well-being of their community amidst ongoing development.

Residential Schools

The Lakeland Métis Nation is deeply engaged in an extensive research project at the historically significant Lac La Biche Mission site, once a Residential School and Convent. Our initial findings reveal the immense suffering endured by those who were forced to attend, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the brave survivors whose stories have profoundly moved us. We recognize the intergenerational trauma resulting from this abuse and offer our heartfelt compassion and support to all affected generations. Committed to uncovering the truth, honoring survivors, and advocating for justice, we strive for a future of healing and understanding, replacing the legacy of abuse with compassion and reconciliation.

Elders

The Lakeland Métis Nation Senior Program is aligned with national priorities to enhance elder well-being, including healthy aging, preventing senior abuse, celebrating diversity, fostering inclusivity, and enabling "aging in place." Our program offers initiatives, workshops, and educational sessions addressing physical, mental, and emotional health. We are committed to supporting our elders in engaging in traditional activities that preserve cultural heritage, uplift spirits, and foster community connection. By facilitating these gatherings, we create opportunities for elders to share wisdom, pass down traditions, and enjoy a sense of belonging within the Lakeland Métis Nation.
