sustainability

The Lakeland Métis Nation is deeply rooted in the historical Métis community of the Lac La Biche region, evolving over time into the vibrant, contemporary Lakeland Métis Nation we know today. However, our citizens currently face significant threats that endanger the sustainability of our traditional Métis way of life. The Athabasca Basin, a crucial water route, facilitates navigation and access to essential areas, including the oil sands region. These areas are vital for hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, and resource gathering, activities that are essential for the subsistence, cultural, and commercial needs of our community. Despite the numerous challenges posed by industrialization and environmental changes, our citizens remain steadfast in their commitment to practicing traditional harvesting activities throughout northern Alberta.
